IUPAT Ontario STAR Awards 2010: Where The Well-Trained Get Their Rewards

If you have taken additional Health and Safety training as a member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades [IUPAT], consider the possibility of being rewarded through the IUPAT Safety Training and Awards [STAR] program.

Initially set up to reward IUPAT members for supplementing and enhancing their skills with Health & Safety training, the program has been constantly evolving to accommodate emerging developments in the professions covered by the IUPAT umbrella. Currently, there are plans underfoot to extend the scope of the award to include union members who have undertaken skills training as well.

For the year 2010, IUPAT Ontario has widened the award parameters in a bid to encourage more Health and Safety training among its members.

Changes made to the Safety Training and Awards [STAR] program by IUPAT Ontario include:

? Waiving of the requirement to attend union meetings to qualify for STAR

? Reduction of number of mandatory courses from five to three. These are WHMIS, Fall Protection, and CPR/first aid

? Recognition of training undertaken at centres outside the IUPAT sphere provided the training is similar to that offered by IUPAT. These include EPSCA site training, NorCAT Training, and training undertaken at Sarnia’s Industrial Training Co-op and Hamilton’s Industrial Training Centre

Through these changes, IUPAT Ontario hopes to encourage increased participation by union members in its Health and Safety Initiative. To enter and win, you have to:

? Be a journeyperson in good standing

? Provide proof of any approved training you may have successfully completed in 2010

? Have tickets/certificates that expire after December 31, 2010
Prizes will be awarded on the following basis:

? Bronze Level: three mandatory courses + three points

? Silver Level: Bronze Level + 10 points

? Gold Level: Bronze Level + 18 points

? Platinum Level: Bronze Level + 22 points

The IUPAT Safety Training and Awards Program has already proved to be an immense success for IUPAT Ontario and all over North America and has, time and again, been considered a gold standard program in the recognition of Health and Safety training and preparedness by unions and employers.

Health and Safety training offers enormous benefits to union, employee, and employer alike. It creates a competitive advantage and is certainly not a cost of doing business. It is a profitable benefit for businesses and employees.
